Woodcreek Varsity in Decisive Win Over Placer

Varsity vs Placer HS on 3/19/2010 6:00:00 PM
Posted Saturday, March 20, 2010 by Kurt Standen

Stellar pitching performances and a bruising offensive outburst enabled the Woodcreek Varsity team to topple a game Placer ballclub Friday night at James Field.

The scoring started in the first inning when Stephen Nogosek singled, Jon Nutter followed with a hit of his own, wild pitches advanced the runners, and a wild pitch to Jay Standen, who drew a walk, scored Nogosek.  The Hillmen were able to hold off the Timberwolves until the 4th when Forsyth reached first on an error, a stolen base and a Justin Smith single sent Forsyth to third, then Trent Pajer, with a productive at bat, hit a fielder’s choice to score Forsyth.  In the 5th Woodcreek unleashed with a barrage that ended with 6 runs scoring.  Shaun Mize reached on an infield hit when Stephen Nogosek scorched a first pitch fastball over the left field fence for a 2 run HR.  Not yet satisfied, the offense kept pouring it on with Jon Nutter ripping a single, an error helped another run home,  Forsyth drawing a walk, Jay Standen beating out another infield single and Justin Smith nailing a line single into center that eluded the Placer defender and plated 2 more runs.  A beautifully executed safety squeeze by Michael Blair completed the eruption.

On the defensive side, lefty Justin Smith pitched a masterful   4 shutout innings.   Smith was relieved with an 8 – 0 lead much to the relief of Placer.  Unfortunately for the home team what awaited them was yet another impressive 3 innings of one hit shutout ball courtesy of another Smith, this time right hander Mark Smith, who left no doubt that the door was slammed and was staying that way.

After a short rest Woodcreek embarks on league play against Oakmont at home on Monday.
