The Woodcreek Varsity team concluded it’s series with Granite Bay on Thursday with a loss which earned Granite Bay a three game sweep. The first two games included a Granite Bay mercy killing, Woodcreek narrowly escaping the same fate in the second game, and a close 3-5 loss in the finale.
The in the first two games Granite Bay showed plenty of power and defense however the second game showed a Grizzly vulnerability to the breaking pitch. In the final game both the Wolves and Grizzlies showed lapses in that runs scored for both teams were all unearned. Justin Smith started on the hill and was very solid throughout, mixing breaking pitches with live fastballs, striking out 6 in 5 innings of work while allowing no earned runs before being relieved by Stephen Nogosek who allowed but one unearned run to cap the effort. In the meantime the Granite Bay pitching limited Woodcreek to 3 hits allowing a total of 11 hits for the entire series. All Woodcreek scoring in this game occurred in the 2nd inning and started when Jay Standen hit a hot grounder toward the hole and the Grizzly shortstop bobbled it and by the time his throw hit first base, Standen had already reached. A Michael Blair sacrifice sent Standen to second, Stephen Nogosek walked, and a fielder’s choice by Shaun Mize sent Standen to third. Jon Nutter followed with a two out double that plated Standen and Mize then Justin Forsyth rifled a single through the box to score Nutter.
Next up for the Timberwolves is another highly rated team in Rocklin as they begin their 3 game contest on Monday.
